In the latest “Talks with Turquoise” podcast, Turquoise Managing Director Ali Naini sits down with James Widmer, CEO of Advanced Electric Machines (AEM), to explore ground breaking advancements in sustainable electric motor technology. AEM, a leading British electric motor company, is redefining electric powertrains that are more efficient, more cost effective, and cleaner to make and recycle. AEM motors’ applications include electric trucks, buses, vans, trains, ships and passenger cars.
AEM’s motor technologies remove the need for permanent magnets that are made from polluting rare earth metals. By eliminating rare earth permanent magnets, costs as well as reliance on geographically concentrated supply chains are reduced. Importantly AEM does this whilst improving performance. Widmer explains: “Our motors improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and increase vehicle range. Customers have reported energy savings of over 10% when using our technology.” These features are now available commercially, having successfully logged millions of kilometres in real-world applications.
Last year the Turquoise-managed Low Carbon Innovation Fund 2 (LCIF2) provided bridge funding that supported the completion of a £23m Series A round led by Par Equity, Legal & General and Barclays Bank. This financial backing has supported scaling of production to support AEM’s initial customers in areas such as refrigerated trailers and buses, focusing of the company’s strategy, and development of targeted new products.
With its innovative, sustainable approach to motor design, AEM is setting new standards for the electric vehicle industry. As Ali Naini notes, “AEM’s work aligns perfectly with the global push for cleaner transportation and compliance with tougher emission standards.”
