In the latest episode of our podcast series, Talks with Turquoise, we dive into the remarkable journey of Adaptavate and its ground-breaking material Breathaboard, a sustainable alternative to traditional plasterboard.
In the UK alone, the built environment contributes an estimated 25% of total national emissions (Environmental Audit Committee). Worryingly, there have been no ‘sustained’ reductions from buildings in the past decade, while the construction industry is in desperate need of low-carbon solutions.
Developed by Adaptavate founder and CEO, Tom Robinson, Breathaboard is a low- carbon, bio-based, alternative to gypsum-based plasterboard. Gypsum board, commonly known as drywall, is a significant carbon emitter, accounting for as much as 3.5% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions.
A product designed by builders for builders, Breathaboard was developed out of the thesis for Robinson’s MSc degree. It is designed to seamlessly fit with established construction techniques and so avoiding the need for industry upskilling in order to be adopted. The company also supplies Breathaplasta, a lime-based plaster that regulates moisture and improves insulation to deliver a healthier and more energy efficient environment.
Join Tom and Ian Thomas, Managing Director, Turquoise, as they discuss:
– Adaptavate’s plans for growth, including carbon-negative product certification
– The partnerships on the horizon with leading construction companies
– Preparing for an upcoming Series A investment round to scale operations
– How Adaptavate fits into the industrial ecosystem of the future
Adaptavate has recently announced the successful construction and commissioning of its Breathaboard pilot production line. The project, financed by a UK Government grant and a consortium of climate-focused investors including Low Carbon Innovation Fund 2, managed by Turquoise, will see the company’s Breathaboard material manufactured in a continuous and scalable process.
